Want the exact number, not an estimate?

publish.ai typesets your actual manuscript into a print-ready interior PDF — real page count, correct gutter margins, cover wrap built to match — plus a validated EPUB, listing copy, and launch graphics. One upload, minutes, from $29.99.

How the estimate works

Words-per-page depends almost entirely on three things: the trim size (how big the page is), the body font size, and the line spacing. Our baselines come from measuring typeset book interiors at each KDP trim size — around 330 words on a 6×9″ page at 11pt — and we scale from there for your settings, then add your front and back matter.

The honest caveat: two books with identical word counts can differ by 5–10% in pages depending on chapter count (each chapter break wastes part of a page), dialogue density (short lines leave white space), and hyphenation. That’s why we show a range. Treat the midpoint as your planning number and expect the final typeset PDF to land inside the range.

Common questions

How many pages is 50,000 words?

At 6×9″ with typical settings (11pt, 1.3 spacing), 50,000 words is roughly 150–165 printed pages plus front and back matter — call it 160–175 total. At 5×8″ the same manuscript runs about 200–215 body pages.

How many pages is 80,000 words?

About 240–265 pages at 6×9″ with typical settings, or 320–350 pages at 5×8″. That's a standard full-length novel — comfortably inside KDP's 24–828-page paperback range at any trim size.

How many words are on a printed book page?

A typeset 6×9″ page holds around 300–350 words at 11pt with normal spacing; a 5×8″ page holds around 230–270. Dense settings can push 6×9″ to ~390, and relaxed large-print-style settings can drop it below 250.

Why does my Word document show a different page count?

Word's default 8.5×11″ pages at 12pt hold 450–500 words — nearly two printed book pages each. Never use your .docx page count for spine or cost math; convert words to typeset pages first.

Does page count matter on KDP?

Yes, three ways: printing cost (about $0.012 per page over 110 pages, straight out of your royalty), spine width (0.00225″ per page — it determines your cover file), and eligibility (paperbacks must be 24–828 pages, hardcovers 75–550).

How can I reduce my printed page count?

A larger trim is the biggest lever: moving from 5×8″ to 6×9″ cuts pages by roughly a quarter. After that: 10.5–11pt type, 1.2–1.3 line spacing, starting chapters on the same page rather than a fresh recto, and trimming front matter.
